The Story Behind the Story: When editor Christopher Sequeira invited me to contribute to Dracula Unfanged, the challenge was irresistible: imagine a world where Count Dracula remained an immortal threat to humanity but had never been a vampire. The possibilities were almost limitless, yet for a time I found myself unable to discover the right path into the story.

Then, one day, the Pied Piper dropped into my imagination. I knew immediately I had found my answer. I pitched the idea to Christopher, who enthusiastically embraced the concept, and from that moment the story flowed almost effortlessly.

“Pied” became one of the rare occasions when my research had to catch up with my creativity. I chose to set the story in modern-day Hamelin, Germany, and imagined the protagonist as a mysterious immortal who had lived many lives but had moulded himself into a charismatic gothic rock musician. The only problem was that I knew almost nothing about gothic rock.

That led me to musician Alex Moss, whose generous insights into the music, performance, aesthetics and emotional landscape of the genre became invaluable. Inspired by those conversations, I stepped well beyond my usual creative comfort zone and wrote the lyrics to an original gothic rock song for the story. When Alex later read them, he told me they felt completely authentic and could easily be set to music. To this day, that feedback remains one of the proudest moments in my writing life.

The greatest surprise came after the story was finished. As my research continued, I discovered historical connections linking the legend of the Pied Piper with Transylvania. Somehow, intuition had quietly led me towards that thread long before my research uncovered it.

Looking back, “Pied“ taught me something unexpected about my own creative process. Sometimes research opens the door to a story. At other times, intuition quietly opens it first, leaving research to catch up. The two are not opposites but companions, each enriching the other.

Perhaps that’s why this story still means so much to me. It reminded me that sometimes the stories we are searching for have already begun searching for us.
