Synopsis: As an ancient evil awakens, the Phantom faces an impossible choice in a battle that will determine Cassandra’s fate and perhaps the fate of the Daintree itself. Outmatched by a force beyond human understanding, he must place his faith in something greater than strength alone. In the final confrontation, the boundaries between nature and the supernatural are tested in a struggle where survival depends on restoring the balance between the natural world and the unimaginable forces that threaten it.
The Story Behind the Story: Sometimes an entire story begins with a single word. For me, that word was “simulacra”. I first encountered it in Fortean Times, a magazine I’ve enjoyed reading for more than twenty years. One of its regular features showcased photographs of simulacra from around the world—rocks that resembled faces, trees with human expressions, branches that looked like dragons and other remarkable natural formations. I found myself wondering what might happen if that curious phenomenon became the foundation for a Phantom adventure.
I wanted to bring the story home to Australia, using the rainforest as more than simply a backdrop. I wanted the landscape to become part of the storytelling itself, shaping the mood and tension as the mystery unfolded. Together they created an atmosphere of beauty, isolation and quiet menace. As the story developed, unexpected thematic layers began to emerge, giving the narrative a depth I hadn’t anticipated. Rather than explain those ideas here, I’d much rather leave readers to discover them for themselves.
One of the most enjoyable challenges was writing the story as a four-part serial. Unlike my earlier Phantom adventures, Simulacra needed to build steadily across four eight-page chapters, each ending with a compelling cliffhanger that encouraged readers to return for the next instalment. At the same time, I experimented with extended sequences told entirely through the artwork, allowing silence, pacing and visual storytelling to carry the narrative.
By the time I wrote Simulacra, Wendell Cavalcanti and I had already collaborated on several Phantom stories, and our creative partnership had developed a wonderful rhythm. Watching him interpret the Australian landscape and bring the story to life from the other side of the world was, once again, one of the great pleasures of the project.
Looking back, Simulacra remains the most literary, layered and atmospheric of my Phantom stories. It challenged me to blend Gothic horror, visual storytelling and classic adventure into something that stretched the boundaries of the Phantom’s world while remaining true to the character at its heart.
